Loan forgiveness coming for early childhood educators living in rural and remote communities 

The federal government has announced it is moving forward, pending regulatory approvals, with plans to forgive Canada Student Loans for early childhood educators who are working in rural or remote communities across Canada. 

Last April, Budget 2024 proposed including early childhood educators to the list of eligible occupations for the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program. This was one initiative that the federal government can take without provincial/territorial agreement to encourage qualified early child educators to relocate to, or remain in, rural and remote communities. 

If approved, the government’s regulatory impact statement says that over the next ten years 3,573 early childhood educators will have been incentivized by the loan forgiveness program to work in rural and remote communities. 

Canadians and child care advocates have the opportunity to comment on the proposed regulations in the Canada Gazette by Monday, March 17, 2025.
