Three provinces announce new child care spaces, partnerships with public institutions  

Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan have all recently announced updated plans for expanding publicly-funded licensed child care programs, using federal transfer payments under the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care program.

• Newfoundland and Labrador 25 new child care projects that will result in 574 new $10 a day pre-kindergarten spaces. This will bring the total number of spaces in development to 1,600.

• Nova Scotia is working with schools and child care partners to support the Nova Scotia Before and After School Program in 21 schools across the province. The program provides care to children aged 4 to 12 years old in public schools and is intended to facilitate a “seamless day” of care and education for young children. Through these new projects, plus expansion at existing sites, the newly announced investment will create more than1,200 spaces additional spaces by the start of  the 2025-26 school year.

• Saskatchewan says it will invest $10.8 million to create 450 new child care spaces at the Saskatchewan Polytechnic campuses in Regina, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and the new Saskatoon campus, as well as 90 additional spaces at Northlands College in La Ronge. These new 540 child care spaces will provide on-campus child care for students, faculty and staff, while also serving as training sites for students pursuing studies in early childhood education.
