Pedagogical Support funding reinstated in Prince Edward Island
Full funding for Prince Edward Island’s Pedagogical Support position has been reinstated until March 31 2027 as a result of concerted efforts by child care providers and advocates in the province.
The PEI government had first announced in May 2026 that it would be cutting the pedagogical support funded hours by 25% due to budgetary concerns. These cuts were then paused until October 2026.
The pedagogical support program in PEI provides funding for staffing beyond ratio-levels, enabling educators to engage in paid preparation time and providing additional support to children. This position in Early Years Centres has proven to be a valuable and effective tool to improve educator working conditions and retention, according to a 2024 survey of the PEI early learning and child care workforce.
After the pedagogical support cuts were first announced, the Early Childhood Development Association (ECDA) of PEI launched an advocacy campaign focused on the impact and importance of this funding for the workforce and children. After several months of lobbying and hundreds of educators, families and community members sharing their stories about the program’s importance, ECDA was “thrilled” to see the program reinstated.
The PEI government has announced a new Pedagogical Support policy will be introduced April 1 2027 and the ECDA will be part of the working group developing this policy.
